Hunger

Hunger. A word that can be so vast in its meaning and extent. I read a book one time that said that when we are truly hungry, it becomes an all-consuming thought and one would almost drop everything to satisfy that hunger.

Matthew 5:6 says, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled.”

Question for you. What does it look like in your life for you to hunger and thirst for righteousness? If Jesus himself, the God-Man, said you are blessed when you hunger and thirst for righteousness, what would that look like if played out in your life?

David Guzik, one of my favorite commentators said this hunger is expressed by the following:

A man longs to have a righteous nature.

A man wants to be sanctified, to be made more holy.

A man longs to continue in God’s righteousness.

A man longs to see righteousness promoted in the world.

How are you doing in those things? Is it a cry of your heart? Is it something you are longing for? Are you hungering and thirsting for righteousness to the point where your lifestyle reflects that longing?

Or does it look like something that you just periodically think about? Is it just a momentary glance in the direction of a spiritual snack machine, but then you realize you’re already full on the cares of this world so why spend the time or energy?

See, the beauty of hungering and thirsting for righteousness is that there is a blessing associated with it. That blessing is that you will be filled. And then you continue to long and then you’ll be filled. See, the wonderful thing about God is there is an endless supply. He will make us holy like him (1 Peter 1:15-16). And yes, that is a justification of our spirit man, forgiving our debt, but there is also a sanctification of our soul. Our sin nature, our flesh, wants to do things our own way. But being sanctified is a process of our learning obedience to God’s Word and the transformation of our lives by the renewing of our mind (Romans 12:2).

Imagine for a moment what it would look like if you longed for righteousness. Imagine if you asked him, prayed, for the fear of the Lord which is to hate all evil (Proverbs 8:13). Imagine if you changed your life in such a way that you were pursuing and longing for righteousness.

What would it look like?
And would you pursue that hunger if you knew that God, the very one who created the universe, promised to fill that longing and meet it?

Would you at least ask him to make you hungry? I dare you to pray and ask God to give you a hunger and thirst for righteousness. But I have to warn you, it’s a dangerous prayer. He listens to that prayer and He loves it. And He absolutely will answer it if you’re daring enough to mean it.

A Butterfly on the Highway

A few days ago, I was traveling on the interstate to go to a city 3 hours away from home. It was just me in the car. I was rocking out to my music and enjoying Jesus. All of the sudden, I noticed something. In front of my car, passing in front of my windshield… was a butterfly! It seemed like quite the contrast. Me – driving approximately 70 mph on the interstate, and this butterfly – taking its time in travel, flight. Have you ever noticed that when butterflies fly, they seem to take their time flittering about, looking for the flowers they want to land on? They don’t exactly strike me as the insects who are zooming about in such a hurry. Life can get so busy. There are so many reasons to rush about, going from place to place, appointment to appointment. But I felt like that butterfly on the highway, was God’s little reminder to me… “You can be on the highway of life. You can be busy. But in your busyness, you need to slow down. Enjoy the beauty God has placed around us. Searc...

Just Being Real

2Ti 1:7 - For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. I read this verse today. And thought of child birth. After all, I am 30 weeks pregnant. Fear is not of God. But power, love and a sound mind is of the Lord. It's almost like thinking about the pain of prophesied crisis, or future end times tribulation, or martyrdom. Expected pain. I went to get my blood drawn today. I HATE getting my blood drawn. I think because you are sitting there waiting on the pain to come, expecting the pain and then bam! They stick you with a needle to draw blood, and you look away and bear it, gritting your teeth until you are done and have given enough blood. Expected pain. I don't like pain. I guess I don't know anyone who does. But it's the expected pain... or more so, the expectation itself of that pain that seems painful. I suppose when it boils down to it - it is truly a fear of the pain to come. But God has not given us a spirit ...

“It’s not about you.”

There is a church that is on the road that I drive every day to and from work. They have a sign that they will post quotes and phrases to inspire the Christian walk. God has been using that sign to speak to me for months and months. Usually I see it on the drive home from work, but today, I read the opposite side going to work. It was such a simple phrase, yet it struck me to the heart… “It’s not about you.” Such a simple phrase, yet the places it took my mind were endless. “It’s not about you.” Hm. So it’s not about me. I began thinking about the areas in my life that I have been praying over. I began thinking of possible scenarios that I am not going through now, but could some day. I began thinking of how God might put me in those situations and why He would allow it… It’s not about me. Unanswered prayer. We all have those things that we have knocked on the doors of Heaven for. There are seasons that we are banging, and there are seasons that we are desperately crying, layi...
