An answer that doesn’t answer.

I read Judges 13 a couple days ago. I encourage you to read through it. But for those of you that I know will skip that part, I’ll give you a super short summary.

Basically this is the chapter that describes the Angel of the Lord announcing to Samson’s mom that she, though barren, would bear a son, and that she should be careful what she what she eats because he will be a Nazarite from birth and will begin to deliver Israel from the Philistines.

Samson’s mom explained what happened to her husband. Her husband asked God to send the man again to teach them what to do once the child was born.

The Angel of the Lord showed up again! Samson’s mom ran to go get her husband and then both of them were talking to the Angel.

The next part is what struck me as I read it.

Judges 13:11-14
11 So Manoah arose and followed his wife. When he came to the Man, he said to Him, “Are You the Man who spoke to this woman?” And He said, “I am.” 12 Manoah said, “Now let Your words come to pass! What will be the boy’s rule of life, and his work?” 13 So the Angel of the LORD said to Manoah, “Of all that I said to the woman let her be careful. 14 “She may not eat anything that comes from the vine, nor may she drink wine or similar drink, nor eat anything unclean. All that I commanded her let her observe.”

I read that and just sat and pondered with mind blown. The Angel of the Lord never answered the question. Samson’s dad asked him what would be his rule of life and his work. And instead, the Angel reminded the mom about the obedience necessary in the place of consecration. Her obedience and consecration would impact Samson not just when he was in the womb, but also later in the example of having a mother who had chosen to obey and live consecrated while pregnant with her son. The discipline and grace that she would walk in, I’m sure would impact Samson as he was growing up.

As I mentioned previously, Samson’s dad prayed before this when he wanted the guy to show back up. Here was his prayer:

Judges 13:8
Then Manoah prayed to the LORD, and said, “O my Lord, please let the Man of God whom You sent come to us again and teach us what we shall do for the child who will be born.”

Come again and teach us what we shall do. And then the Angel shows up again. And the next question is what will be his work. And the answer is obey and consecrate.

“Of all that I said to the woman let her be careful…All that I commanded her let her observe.”

Samson. A man who was empowered by God in his consecration. Also a man notorious for allowing his consecration to be compromised.

Could it be that in the even before conception, God was highlighting that the fact that consecration would impact the work of Samson?

A Butterfly on the Highway

A few days ago, I was traveling on the interstate to go to a city 3 hours away from home. It was just me in the car. I was rocking out to my music and enjoying Jesus. All of the sudden, I noticed something. In front of my car, passing in front of my windshield… was a butterfly! It seemed like quite the contrast. Me – driving approximately 70 mph on the interstate, and this butterfly – taking its time in travel, flight. Have you ever noticed that when butterflies fly, they seem to take their time flittering about, looking for the flowers they want to land on? They don’t exactly strike me as the insects who are zooming about in such a hurry. Life can get so busy. There are so many reasons to rush about, going from place to place, appointment to appointment. But I felt like that butterfly on the highway, was God’s little reminder to me… “You can be on the highway of life. You can be busy. But in your busyness, you need to slow down. Enjoy the beauty God has placed around us. Searc...

Just Being Real

2Ti 1:7 - For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. I read this verse today. And thought of child birth. After all, I am 30 weeks pregnant. Fear is not of God. But power, love and a sound mind is of the Lord. It's almost like thinking about the pain of prophesied crisis, or future end times tribulation, or martyrdom. Expected pain. I went to get my blood drawn today. I HATE getting my blood drawn. I think because you are sitting there waiting on the pain to come, expecting the pain and then bam! They stick you with a needle to draw blood, and you look away and bear it, gritting your teeth until you are done and have given enough blood. Expected pain. I don't like pain. I guess I don't know anyone who does. But it's the expected pain... or more so, the expectation itself of that pain that seems painful. I suppose when it boils down to it - it is truly a fear of the pain to come. But God has not given us a spirit ...

“It’s not about you.”

There is a church that is on the road that I drive every day to and from work. They have a sign that they will post quotes and phrases to inspire the Christian walk. God has been using that sign to speak to me for months and months. Usually I see it on the drive home from work, but today, I read the opposite side going to work. It was such a simple phrase, yet it struck me to the heart… “It’s not about you.” Such a simple phrase, yet the places it took my mind were endless. “It’s not about you.” Hm. So it’s not about me. I began thinking about the areas in my life that I have been praying over. I began thinking of possible scenarios that I am not going through now, but could some day. I began thinking of how God might put me in those situations and why He would allow it… It’s not about me. Unanswered prayer. We all have those things that we have knocked on the doors of Heaven for. There are seasons that we are banging, and there are seasons that we are desperately crying, layi...
